Protocol for Checking Unconscious Bias

Summary: The Mindful Reflection Protocol is a process that can be used by teachers to check their unconscious bias when interpreting student behavior. The protocol has five steps:

  1. Describe the behavior or interaction. The teacher should describe the behavior or interaction in as much detail as possible, without interpretation.

  2. Reflect on feelings and thoughts. The teacher should reflect on their feelings and thoughts when working with the student. What triggers them about this behavior? What are their assumptions?

  3. Explain interpretation of the behavior. The teacher should explain their interpretation of the student's behavior. What leads them to this interpretation? What are their assumptions? What are their expectations for the situation?

  4. Consider alternative explanations of the behavior. The teacher should consider alternative explanations of the student's behavior. What might the student be doing or trying to communicate?

  5. Identify one small change to make. The teacher should identify one small change they can make to reframe the behavior and respond differently to it.

The Mindful Reflection Protocol can help teachers become more aware of their own biases and how they may be affecting their interactions with students. By taking the time to reflect on their thoughts and feelings, teachers can begin to challenge their assumptions and interpretations of student behavior. This can lead to more positive and productive interactions in the classroom.

Here are some additional tips for using the Mindful Reflection Protocol:

  • Be patient and gentle with yourself. This process takes time and practice.

  • Be open to new perspectives. Don't be afraid to challenge your own assumptions.

  • Be willing to change your behavior. If you find that your interpretations of student behavior are leading to negative interactions, be willing to make changes.

  • Get support from colleagues or mentors. Talking to others about your experiences can be helpful.

The Mindful Reflection Protocol is a valuable tool for teachers who want to create more inclusive and equitable classrooms. By taking the time to reflect on their own biases, teachers can begin to challenge their assumptions and interpretations of student behavior. This can lead to more positive and productive interactions in the classroom.
